Liu undergoes a rigorous training in the 35 chambers of Shaolin, each one teaching a different aspect of martial arts. He excels in every chamber and impresses the monks with his talent and determination. He eventually reaches the 35th chamber, where he teaches kung fu to the novices. He then proposes to create a 36th chamber, where he would teach kung fu to ordinary people outside the temple, in order to spread the Shaolin teachings and help the oppressed. The abbot agrees and gives him the name San Te, meaning "third disciple".
San Te returns to his hometown and opens a kung fu school, where he trains many students, including some former rebels. He also challenges and defeats various martial artists who work for the Manchus, earning their respect and admiration. He then leads his students and allies to fight against Tien Ta and his army, in a final showdown that tests his skills and courage.
